Letter Boxed

A fun game is Letter-Boxed, in which you must form as many 3- and 4-letter words across and down as you can by placing each letter into the 4 by 4 grid one at a time.

Random letters start to fill the box next to the Next button at the top of the screen. Click or press anywhere on the playing grid that is empty to enter the letter. Once you're happy with where the letter is, click the Next button to lock it in place and get the next letter. Try it in different squares.

See how many times you can prevail over Lexi, the artificial opponent. If there is room, Lexi's playing grid will appear below or next to yours. If Lexi's grid isn't already displayed, you can examine it at any time by clicking on her name on the scoreboard. Click "You" to go back to your individual grid.

After clearing the grids in the prior game, use the Next button to begin a new one. Until one of you or Lexi reaches 100 or more, the running totals will be kept.

Simply press the Clear button whenever you want to start over with all scores and a new series.

The letters are chosen at random from a pool of letters that are generally ranked by the number of times they occur in English words (see table at right). Letters are chosen at random, so they might only show up once or twice in any given game. In a game, only three of each letter (A, E, I, O, or U) or seven total vowels are permitted. The letters QU are regarded as forming a single letter.

There is a list of every four-letter word you could possibly make in any row or column. To learn more, only click the button at the start of the row or column you want to study. The only prerequisite is that there must already be one letter in the row or column. The word list takes into account the letters that were already used in the game.

Features:

With only a small number of letters available in each game, the game delivers a special challenge.
The game offers a chance to boost spelling and vocabulary abilities.
In the event that the current arrangement is too challenging to use, the game includes the option to shuffle the letters.

Rules:

  • The object of the game is to use the letters on the grid to make as many three- and four-letter words as you can.
  • In a word, a letter may only be used once.
  • Words can only be formed in a horizontal or vertical direction.
  • Each game has a certain number of letters that must be used, and in order to win, the player must use every letter in the grid.

Tips:

  • To make words longer, look for common prefixes and suffixes.
  • To increase your score, try to use each letter in the box at least once.
  • To make more words with the same letters, pay attention to whether the words are horizontal or vertical in the grid.
  • Keep in mind that proper names and acronyms are prohibited.
